BIJOU 1 & 2 – South Tahoe Neighborhood
NEIGHBORHOOD PROFILE- BIJOU 1 & 2
(10/09/14) written by Shannon Witt, 2014 South Tahoe Association of REALTORS® Public Relations Chair
Driving through the heart of South Lake Tahoe in the middle of summer, you smell the aroma of camp fires from the campground as you take in the view of the changing colors on the lake (the only spot in South Lake where you drive right next to the lake). You’ve just entered the Bijou neighborhoods. Bijou 1 makes up the majority of the area while Bijou 2 is found within a “pocket” near the west side of Highway 50 (turn off Rufus Allen Blvd) and Johnson Blvd. Bijou municipal golf course is located in the middle of this neighborhood offering some spectacular views from back yards and decks. From the golf course one can travel down Johnson Ave to Al Tahoe and find the newly renovated Bijou Park with amenities including a skate park, basket ball courts, play ground, Dog Park, roller derby course, BMX track, disc golf course and picnic area.
Bijou is one of the oldest neighborhoods in South Lake. You can find quite a mix of homes ranging from cabins built in the early 40’s to 2400 square foot new contemporary homes along with condo-hotels and condominiums. The central location along with the level terrain creates a great flat neighborhood for those who prefer easier access in the winter time. The proximity to the lake, the recreation center and shopping along with quick access to Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort make this area desirable for second home owners, vacation rentals and primary residences.
