(Posted 03.11.2021) Leadership of the South Tahoe Association of REALTORS® (STAR) took action at the end of 2020 to make some large donations to community not-for-profit agencies to help provide much needed relief for those in need due to the pandemic.

On December 16, 2020 the STAR Board of Directors voted to give $20,000 to Tahoe Magic, an entity that provides financial assistance to renters, and $5,000 to Christmas Cheer that provides meals and access to a food pantry for those with food insecurity.

Board member for Tahoe Magic Wendy David writes, “Thank you, so very much, for making the decision to give $20,000 to Tahoe Magic, all restricted to shelter assistance.  Just yesterday, Tahoe Magic responded to 20 requests and provided $10,000 at $500 for each request.  Funds went directly to landlords, owners and property managers to support struggling families.  My heart is full with the warmth of your support.”

South Tahoe Association of REALTORS® President Kili Rahbeck said, “when we were considering where to donate money, it made the most sense that REALTORS® should support our community in this difficult time. With so many still out of work due to the pandemic and unable to pay their bills, we wanted to help tenants stay in their homes while also providing support to property owners who rent to those families. It’s a win-win all around!” Funds were donated and distributed before much needed assistance had gone to the state to provide 80% of rents as relief to landlords and investors that have not received rents for months and cannot evict due to federal and state moratoriums.

Christmas Cheer All Year was able to fully fund their Christmas Community Giveaway that provided food to 178 families, including 531 people as well as gifts for 201 children for the holidays.  “Without generous donations from organizations like you, we would not have been able to provide food for so many.  We and our clients appreciate your support.”

Past President Rhonda Keen stated, “food and housing are such basic necessities, and no one should have to go without. Despite the pandemic, many REALTORS® were blessed with a busy real estate market in 2020, and we felt it important that we give back. We’re grateful that we were in a position to help so many.”

Donations and support are still needed as we wait for it to be safer to reopen our economy and put people back to work.  Tahoe Magic, Christmas Cheer All Year and many other organizations continue to serve people to help them through this crisis.  Any sized donation is gratefully accepted.
